2018 Scholarship Recipients
Jaresa Stockdale and Deshawn C. Washington are the inaugural YAN Foundation Scholarship recipients.
My name is Jaresa Stockdale, current senior attending DRW College Prep. I was born raised in Chicago, IL residing on westside of Chicago. I am the second youngest of four girls. I attended Frazier International Magnet for majority of my elementary career. During my eighth grade year, I transferred to and graduated from Jefferson Junior High. At an early age, I knew that I wanted to pursue a career within the medical field. Because of this, I made the decision to attend Crane Medical Prep High School. Attending Crane Medical Prep increased my desire to study medicine. In order to develop my academic skills and put myself in a position to attend a great College, I decided to attend and graduate from DRW College Prep. While attending DRW College Prep, I was inducted into the National Honors Society and participated in many extra-curricular activities. In addition to this, I completed many community service projects and gave back to my community by volunteering at the local elementary schools. In the Fall of 2019, I will further my academic career at the University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign studying Health Science.
Meet African American youth leader Deshawn C. Washington. Currently in his senior year at Excel Academy Southwest, he will be graduating this June along with dozens of other at-risk youth from the community. While busy seeing to his studies and participating in the school’s student government – the Bulldogs – he has also found the time to create his own not-for-profit organization called Love with No Explanation. So far, Deshawn has used his organization to create and distribute hundreds of meals and clothing items to Chicago’s homeless population. Giving back to his community is incredibly important to him and he hopes that using his organization and leading by example will create more positive African American leaders and role models among his peers. He strives not only to create positive change throughout his community, but also to inspire others to do the same. Deshawn doesn’t plan to stop there, however, and has aspirations to enter state and federal level politics in order to elicit change from the highest levels of government. In a few years, don’t be surprised to see Deshawn campaigning for public office.
